In 1915 a smaller version of the statue already existed. This figure shows a Czech woman, who married a Russian diplomat. The artist Ivan Mestrovic was in love with her. The bronze sculpture shows this young woman. She is partially naked. The woman sits on a stone and looks downward.

The Croatian artistIvan Mestrovic was born on August 15, 1883 in Vrpolje. He was a Yugoslav and Croatian architect and sculptor. His work is very important in the field of the religious subject. He also worked as author and university professor. He studied at the Vienna Art Academy from 1907 to 1909. Then he went to Paris for some years. After staying in the French capital city he worked as professor at the Art Academy in Zagreb. In 1947 Ivan Mestrovic went to the USA. His art works showed influences of the Vienna Secession and the French expressionism. Furthermore they have characteristics of the Renaissance sculptures made by Michelangelo. Ivan Mestrovic also used the artistic tradition of his home country. He died on January 16, 1962.
