Alfredo Pina (1883-1969)

His famous bust of Victor Hugo is located in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. He was born in 1883 in Milan. The second largest city in Italy was also the workplace of the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci. He studied in Milan at the Accademia di Brera.

He was born in 1883 in Milan. The second largest city in Italy was also the workplace of the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci. He studied in Milan at the Accademia di Brera. 

The life of Alexander Alfredo Pina

The Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1776 by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and is located with other cultural institutions in the Palazzo Brera. Besides Pina many well- known personalities completed in the arts and cultural scene at the Academy, including the designer and architect Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940) and the Franco-Italian sculptor Medardo Rosso (1858-1928 ). 

After he won the national Grand Prize for sculpture di Brera, he opened his own studio in the French capital. Between 1909 and 1910 he studied with Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) in the city on the Seine. Like other artists of his time, he was impressed by Rodin and his art that could ever represent a bridge between yesterday and tomorrow and set innovative standards in the field of sculpture and sculpture.

Influences on his works

With his famous works The Burghers of Calais and The Thinker, which was part of the portal The Gates of Hell, Rodin was a forerunner of Expressionism and Cubism. 

Pina became a representative of Modern Art and exhibited his work in the years between the two world wars in the salons of the Artistes Français, the Tuileries and the Salon d`Automne. 

The showroom wanted to make the innovative currents on display and unknown artists a platform to showcase their works. Alfredo P. was also a member of the jury of the Salon d` Automne. 

Alfredo Pina was a member of the artistic circles of Montparnasse, known for its cultural and artistic diversity. After the war, he also exhibited at the Salon des Independants and recorded commercial successes, as his figures, sculptures and busts were cast and distributed by the Paris Valsuani Foundry. Alfredo P. died in Paris in 1966.
