"Emily / Spirit of Ecstasy - Bronze Figure, signed Stevens"
The Bronze Sculpture “Spirit of Ecstasy” was made after a cast of the British sculptor Alfred Stevens (* January 28, 1818; † May 1, 1875) by using the noble material bronze. The signed exhibit “Spirit of Ecstasy” – also known as the sculpture “Emily” – is one of the best known figures of the automobile history; “Emily” is known as the radiator mascot of the Rolls-Royce. On February 6, 1911 a first version of Emily was affixed on a Rolls-Royce. The exhibit shown here was affixed on a solid marble base and is a lightly abstracted recast. The original of “Spirit of Ecstasy” was made after an image of Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory.
As all of the bronze products in our shop, this exhibit is hand-cast in our own foundry and subject to our strict quality inspections throughout the entire process of fabrication. All of our sculptures are exclusively compounded with the help of lost-wax casting.

The popular radiator mascot “Spirit of Ecstasy” in this version here was made by the sculptor Alfred Stevens. The only reason “Spirit of Ecstasy” was once created was because of a great idea of the British Lord Montagu, who wanted a radiator mascot for his Rolls-Royce. Therefore he ordered a little sculpture from the sculptor Sykes. Sykes accepted the deal and started to create a radiator mascot inspired by the goddess Nike and by the British woman Miss Eleanor Velasco Thornton (1881- 1951), who was his model for this work. Later, the idea of radiator mascots got so popular that other companies adopted the idea. Even today the famous figure “Spirit of Ecstasy” still decorates every Rolls-Royce.
