Product description

"Modern Art - Ecce Puer (Behold the Boy), after Medardo Rosso"

Weight 4,1 kg

The sculpture "Behold the Boy" was designed after an idea of the Italian-French sculptor Medardo Rosso. It shows the head of a young boy, that somehow is covered and therefore it seems vague, flat and fleeting. Individual marks of the child are hidden underneath the surface of a cloth. The observer can't see any facial expression, so the interpretation of the bronze bust depends on the story behind the sculpture. With the bust Rosso preserved a situation that happened to him in 1906. He saw Alfred William Mond, the son of an industrialist in London, looking through the window, half covered by the curtains. He wanted to capture the moment, when the child is stepping out of the floating cloth. He succeeded to create the sculpture realistic and at the same time mystic in only a single sitting. The bust was first exhibited in Paris and consists of 100% fine bronze.

As all of the bronze products in our shop, this exhibit is hand-cast in our own foundry and subject to our strict quality inspections throughout the entire process of fabrication. All of our sculptures are exclusively compounded with the help of lost-wax casting.

The sculptor Medardo Rosso, who created the bust "Behold the Boy", was born on 21st June 1885 in Turin, Italy. His father was the city stationmaster and family moved in 1870 to Milan. While he did his military service from 1879 to 1881 he took lessons in painting. He studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, but couldn't complete his studies, because he was excluded from the academy after eleven months. In 1896 he went to Paris and established there his own foundry. The Dutch artist Etha Fles became the patron of his art. He took the French nationality in 1902, but twenty years later he returned to Milan and died there in 1928 during an operation.
