Bronze Figure - Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix - A. Canova

"Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix" (Venus Victorious) is probably the most famous work by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. Pauline Bonaparte, sister of the French statesman Napoleon, was insisted in being portrayed as Venus by Canova in 1807. In neoclassical style Pauline staged as a half-naked beauty on a couch, her head resting on her right arm, holding an apple in the left hand. The sculpture is covered with golden color and positioned on black marble. It bears the signature by the artist Canova. The original can be seen at the Museo e Galleria Borghese in Rome.

Antonio Canova (1757-1822) was a leading representative of the Italian classicism. Characteristic of Canova was the emphasis on rest instead of moving, understated restraint instead of exuberant emotion and elegant simplicity instead of illusion. Canova was the last Italian artist who achieved worldwide fame at his time. The Italian architecture, sculpture and painting had played a pioneering role in the cultural life of Europe for several centuries. This domination came to an end with Canova's death in 1822.
