The Greek god Hermes is best known in his role as messenger of the gods. In addition, Hermes is also patron god of traffic, travelers, merchants and shepherds. In Roman mythology, the Hermes was identified with the Roman god Mercury. The Hermes sculpture by Giambologna is probably one of the most famous Hermes plastic representations. Hermes, also known as The Flying Mercury reflects the Hermes balancing on a column of air, which is fed by the mouth of Zephyr. The Flying Mercury is one of the most popular compositions of Giambologna. The sculpture perched on a shapely marble base and is signed with the artist’s name.
