Mythology Bronze statue - Donatello's David - signed Donatello

This figure by Donatello is also called „Bronze David“. The original sculpture was created in Florenz in the time of renaissance. This figure has a special importance. It was the first statue, which showed the full-sized view of a male nude since antiquity. The art appreciation of the ancient times is to see in this sculpture. When Donatello created the „David“ he used new knowledge. So the body of the man is more natural than before. The youth is naked. He is only wearing boots and a hat with a laurel wreath. “David” is partially standing on the head of Goliath. The bronze sculpture has the signature of Donatello.

For creating these bronze sculptures the lost-wax casting is used. The objects are casted in hand-work. They are made under strict quality instructions.

The artist Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi or also known as Donatello was born in 1386 in the Italian city Florence. There he died on December 13, 1466. He was an early Renaissance sculpture and artist. Donatello is also known for the creation in bas-relief. His father was Niccolò di Betto Bardi. Donatello received his education in the house of the Martelli family and his artistic training in a workshop of goldsmith. Then he worked in the atelier of the sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. There he was one of 22 assistants. From 1404 to 1407 he undertook excavations and study in Rome.
