Mythology Bronze Sculpture - Zeus - signed B. Thorvaldsen

The artist Bertel Thorvaldsen liked to use motifs of the ancient mythology. So it influenced the creation of his sculptures. Well-known works are the figures Mercury and Venus, Ganymed and Hebe, the daughter of Zeus. The artist emphasized straight lines and clear forms after the example of the classical-ancient art. The illustration of nakedness shows the concept of Antiquity. Zeus is pictured in a lot of works, because he is the highest Olympian God in the Greek mythology. This figure is made of 100 per cent bronze and has the signature of Bertel Thorvaldsen. The muscles of Zeus are clearly elaborated.

The bronze sculpture is done in the process of lost-wax casting. The objects are made in hand-work. The creation happens under strict quality instructions.

The Danish sculptorBertel Thorvaldsen (Thorwaldsen) was born on November 19, 1770 in Copenhagen. He died on March 24, 1844 at the age of 73 years. His father worked as an Icelandic wood carver. So Bertel Thorvaldsen got the first art lessons by his father. At the age of eleven years he attended the school of the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1787 he received a silver medal for works of modelling. In 1789 he got the next silver medal for the relief “Resting Cupid”. Bertel Thorvaldsen received benefits to continue his study. In 1793 he gained a travel grant for a triannual stay in Rom.
