"Art Deco Bronze Figure - Penthesilea - Marcel-André Bouraine"
The adjoining bronze figure bears the title "Penthesilea, Queen of the Amazons" and was designed by the French Art Deco artist Marcel Bouraine. Depicted is a warrior, aiming with bow and imagined arrow on an object in the distance Penthesilea was an Amazonian queen in Greek mythology, the daughter of Ares and Otrera and the sister of Hippolyta, Antiope and Melanippe. Penthesilea had killed Hippolyta with a spear when they were hunting deer; this accident caused Penthesilea so much grief that she wished only to die, but, as a warrior and an Amazon, she had to do so honorably and in battle. The sculpture on the left bears the signature of the artist.
