This art object is a Fabergé egg made of white marble and bronze with gold leafs. The egg and the base are made of fine marble and the egg itself is encircled by a holder made of bronze. The holder is decorated with Art Nouveau ornaments. The upper part of the egg is removable; inside there is a cavity for storing jewellery or other small utensils.
A Fabergé egg is one of a limited number of jeweled eggs created by Peter Carl Fabergé and his company from 1885 to 1917. The most famous of the eggs are the ones made for the Russian Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II as Easter gifts for their wives and mothers, often called the 'Imperial' Fabergé eggs. The House of Fabergé made about 50 eggs and 43 have survived. Another two were planned for Easter 1918, but because of the Russian Revolution they were not delivered.
Peter Carl Fabergé, also known as "Karl Gustavovich Fabergé" (30 May 1846 – 24 September 1920), was a Russian jeweller, best known for the famous Fabergé eggs, made in the style of genuine Easter eggs, but using precious metals and gemstones rather than more mundane materials.
