Born in the Alfama district, he spent his youth sketching figures along winding alleyways and later honed his craft in local studios known for their classical bronze casting. Lopez completed "The Slave" in his own Lisbon studio. He cast the figure in finely alloyed bronze and placed it on a polished marble base.
