"Begging Elephant (1908) - Signed Bugatti - Bronze - Animal Figurine"
Begging Elephant is an authentic animal sculpture by the Italian artist Rembrandt Bugatti that was created in Paris in 1908. The bronze sculpture Begging Elephant is said to be one of Bugatti’s most famous figurines. The imposing bronze elephant presents itself with a stretched-out trunk and a bent front leg. The natural design of this animal figurine stems from the fact that Rembrandt Bugatti studied the animal for months in Paris’ Jardin de Plantes. As both a haven of peace and a source of inspiration, the zoological garden of the French capital served as a model for many of the artist’s numerous animal figurines. The elephant sculpture gets its final touch from a chromatic marble base which accentuates its overall effect. Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916) was an Italian artist who from an early age on specialised in animal depictions. As a member of a family of still world-renowned furniture and car manufacturers, the young Rembrandt Bugatti found a refuge in the fine arts, far away from the radical changes at the turn of the last century. Numerous visits to the Parisian zoo inspired many of his works. His authentic animal figurines are immensely sought-after by many collectors nowadays. During his short life, Bugatti managed to create more than 300 different animal sculptures. He ended his own life in 1916, at the young age of 31.
