Auguste Rodin – The Revolutionary Master of Modern Sculpture

François-Auguste-René Rodin was born on November 12, 1840, in Paris, France, and died on November 17, 1917, in Meudon, near Paris, at the age of 77. The renowned French sculptor and draughtsman is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern sculpture. Although he initially struggled to gain recognition, his remarkable artistic talent eventually transformed European sculpture. Rodin broke away from traditional academic conventions by introducing expressive movement, realistic anatomy and deeply emotional compositions. His most celebrated masterpieces include The Thinker, The Gates of Hell, The Burghers of Calais and The Kiss. Today, his extraordinary works are displayed in prestigious museums and collections throughout the world.

The Fascinating History of The Kiss – A Love Story Immortalised in Bronze

The famous The Kiss Rodin Sculpture was conceived around 1882 as part of Rodin's monumental project The Gates of Hell, inspired by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. The sculpture portrays the tragic lovers Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini, whose forbidden romance ended when Francesca's husband discovered their relationship and murdered them both. Rodin originally intended to incorporate the embracing couple into his monumental composition but later decided that their tender passion was better suited to an independent artwork. First exhibited separately in 1887, The Kiss quickly became one of his most admired creations. Its universal portrayal of love, desire and human connection established it as an enduring masterpiece of modern art.
