Hermes, a figure of Greek mythology, is mostly known in his role as messenger of the gods. Moreover, Hermes is also patron of traffic, travelers, merchants and shepherds. He was second youngest of the Olympian gods. In Roman mythology, the Hermes was identified with the Roman god Mercury. The Hermes sculpture by Giovanni da Bologna - in short: Giambologna - is probably one of the most famous plastic representations of the god. "The Flying Mercury" reflects the Hermes balancing on a column of air, which is fed by the mouth of Zephyr. The young Hermes figure can be viewed from all sides - the overstretched body generates elegance and grace. The sculpture sits on a beautifully shaped marble base and is provided with the acquired from the original signature.

Giovanni da Bologna (1529 - 1608) was a Flemish-Italian sculptor. His work is commonly attributed to Mannerism, the late phase of the Renaissance. He made numerous sculptures of the Italian nobility, especially for the Medici.
