Animal Bronze Figure – Resting Rhino on Marble – Signed Milo
In the luminous studios of Lisbon, Miguel Fernando Lopez first explored the alchemy of metal and form. Born in 1955 in the heart of the Portuguese capital, he absorbed the baroque façades and maritime heritage of his city, allowing these influences to shape his later work. Years of study in classical sculpture and countless sketches of wildlife led Lopez to master the lost-wax casting process that gives life to his rhinoceros statue. Each piece emerges from his workshop as both a celebration of strength and a meditation on stillness.
Conception and Creation in Lisbon
Lopez completed this Resting Rhino on Marble in his downtown atelier where the busy clatter of trams is replaced by the soft rhythm of hammer and chisel. The sculpture’s marble plinth, quarried from Portugal’s storied Carrara veins, was chosen to complement the warm patina of bronze. Over weeks of careful polishing and patination, the marble base became the perfect stage for the noble form above—a rhino statue that seems at once weighty and tranquil, its massive body gently folded in repose.
Anatomy of Grandeur
The beast’s folded limbs and lowered head capture a vulnerable moment of rest rarely witnessed in the wild. Lopez’s attention to detail is evident in the subtle texturing of the hide, from the gentle curves of the dewlap to the pronounced ridges around the horn. Light plays across the surface in a dance of highlights and shadows, revealing the rhythmic pattern of muscle and bone beneath. As a rhinoceros statue, it transcends mere representation to evoke a palpable presence filling the room.
The Majesty of the Rhino
As one of Earth’s most formidable creatures, the rhinoceros embodies paradoxes of power and peace. In their natural habitats, rhinos traverse plains and woodlands with a quiet authority, their solitary nature lending an air of mystery. Today, these giants face threats from poaching and habitat loss, making each artistic tribute all the more poignant. This rhino statue stands not only as a work of art but also as a testament to conservation, urging viewers to honor and protect these ancient denizens of the wild.
A Lasting Testament to Craftsmanship
Signed “Milo” at its base, the Resting Rhino on Marble is a culmination of Lopez’s lifelong dedication to capturing life’s essence in solid material. It belongs among his most evocative pieces, joining earlier series of big cats, birds, and other majestic creatures. Designed and completed entirely in Lisbon, this sculpture anchors any space with its serene energy. Collectors seeking a masterpiece of both technique and soul will find in this rhinoceros statue a timeless companion for gallery, study, or living space, forever whispering of nature’s grandeur and the artist’s enduring passion.
