Frederick the Great on Horseback – Old Fritz – Signed by Nick
In this masterful depiction of "Frederick the Great on Horseback," M. Nick captures the imposing presence of Frederick the Great King of Prussia, and immortalizes him in solid bronze. The rider sits astride his prancing steed, holding the reins loosely with both hands. The balance between horse and rider, movement and stillness, evokes the spirit of the original monument – yet M. Nick's sculptural language appears simultaneously contemporary and deeply rooted in tradition.
From a Lyon neighborhood to the Paris studio
M. Nick was born in 1978 in the silk-weaving city of Lyon. Surrounded by Roman ruins and gilded medieval facades, he developed an early fascination with how public monuments can shape civic identity. After a demanding education at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he established his own studio in the Marais, where he combined classical craftsmanship with a fresh, narrative flair. Beneath vaulted skylights and amidst the bustling foundry planning, he began modeling this homage.
The storied beginnings of a monument
The original equestrian statue of Frederick the Great of Prussia stands guard over Berlin's Unter den Linden boulevard and was unveiled on May 31, 1851. This day marked the 111th anniversary of "Old Fritz's" accession to the throne and the 65th anniversary of his death. Over the decades, some of Europe's most distinguished sculptors contributed to its realization—no fewer than 100 designs and models were proposed before the final vision emerged. M. Nick's bronze now joins this tradition, capturing the king's determined gaze and warrior-like bearing for a new generation.
Creating a Contemporary Legacy
The modeling began in M. Nick's Paris studio, inspired by historical photographs of the original Unter den Linden building and contemporary engravings of Frederick's uniform and armor. The life-size clay model captured the horse's taut tendons and the draping of the king's cloak. It then traveled across the border to a foundry in Normandy, where artisans, using the ancient lost-wax casting process, transferred every fold and trim into molten bronze. After cooling, the sculpture was carefully hand-carved and given a warm, honey-colored patina that highlights muscle tone, fabric folds, and metallic accents.
Equine Grace and Majestic Stance
Here, the horse's uplifted foreleg testifies to measured movement—pride restrained by disciplined strength. Frederick himself, depicted in sharp profile and wearing a feathered bicorne, gazes into the horizon with the same determination that once characterized Prussian rule. The subtle tilt of his head and the set of his shoulders speak of contemplation and unshakable confidence. From every angle, viewers discover new echoes of the original Berlin landmark and M. Nick's own imaginative design.
An Edition in Honor of History
Each statue is signed "M. Nick" at the base of the rectangular pedestal. This bronze equestrian statue pays homage to a legacy that began on Unter den Linden. This is more than just decoration; it is a tribute to a ruler whose reforms shaped modern Europe and a testament to the endurance of public sculpture.
The Enduring Fascination of Frederick and His Steed
With this reinterpretation of one of the most famous statues of the 19th century, M. Nick invites us to reflect on leadership, memory, and the interplay of art and power. Frederick the Great on Horseback shines in private galleries, formal studies, and institutional collections alike—reminding us that monuments speak across the centuries, and each new casting offers an opportunity to revisit the myths we perpetuate. In bronze and shadow, Old Fritz rides once again—a timeless symbol of strength, strategy, and sovereign vision.
