Karl Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen was born on November 19, 1970 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The sculptor was already accepted at the Royal Academy of Arts at the age of 11. He learned to carve wood when he was a young boy. Because of a stipend he was able to travel to Rome, where he continued his education. Thorvaldsen spent almost all his life in Italy. His sculptural work was influenced by the Neoclassic and he found a lot of his motifs at the world of the Greek mythology. “Hebe” like the sculpture is named is also part of the Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Hera and Zeus and well-known as the goddess of youth. The sculptor Thorvaldsen died on March 24, 1844. A bronze casted self-portrait is exhibited at Central Park, New York.
