Art Nouveau Amphora made of Marble with two Angels

This appealing Art Nouveau amphora is a wonderful piece for decoration, which can adorn and revalue several, different rooms. The shape of the sculpture reminds of the Greek vase form of an amphora, which is defined by its bulbous form and two handles at the top opening. This modern Art Nouveau version also has a lid, which gives the amphora the look of a goblet. Besides the two handles are replaced by two angels or rather puttos, which give the container a special graceful appearance and that are made very detailed. The amphora consists for the most part of dark marble and is also fixed on a marble plinth. But the angels, the knob of the lid and the ornaments on the lid and at the base of the sculpture are made of 100% finest bronze, which is polished golden. Also the marble plinth has some shining polished bronze decorations on it.

As all of the bronze products in our shop, this exhibit is hand-cast in our own foundry and subject to our strict quality inspections throughout the entire process of fabrication. All of our sculptures are exclusively compounded with the help of lost-wax casting.

Amphora - Garden Ornaments

An amphora is a vase-shaped container with a long neck, which is narrower than the body, and two handles. It mostly consists of ceramic, but can also be made of metal. The amphora is a Greek vase form, which has its name from the Greek words amphí (on both sides) and phérein (to carry). It is also an ancient Roman unit of measurement for liquids, which today measures 26,026 l. Amphoras were used in the antiquity to transport and keep among other things oil, olives, wine, honey, milk, grain and fruits. They were made in the regions where the transported goods were harvested and produced and varied greatly in height. Interestingly enough the most amphoras were used only once and after the transport they were destroyed. Only a few times amphoras were used as urns at cremations or to cover the corpses in the graves. The ancient vases were made around Sevilla in Spain even until after the antiquity. Since the 15th and 16th century forms without handles are preferred. Amphoras are the examples for today’s vases and containers. They are nowadays especially used for decoration, but a few regions produce special wine with the help of amphoras. There are different types and forms of the Greek vases. For example the neck amphora, the belly amphora or the panathenaic prize amphora.
