Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, the designer of this piece of art, was born on May 14, 1827 in Valenciennes (France) and died on October 12, 1875 in Courbevoie near Paris. Already as a school child did Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux finance his way of life with the help of commissions by various employers. Years later, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux attended the renowned Parisian École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Afterwards, he went on a rather long journey to Italy, where he stayed a couple of years and studied the old masters of fine arts and discovered his passion for antique images. Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux later returned to Paris where he became a well-known naturalistic sculptor.
